This article will describe what happens when you copy an article or clause containing a variable.

Please note: 'Variables' are available with 'Premium'.

When you copy an article or clause that contains a variable:

  1. The variable will be retained as a variable when:
    • The copying user is an administrator on the destination project or master folder. Chorus will create the variable in the destination project or master folder if there isn't one with the same name already.
    • The destination project or master folder already contains a variable with the same name.
      • So, suppose the copying user is a contributor and not an administrator on the destination project or master folder. In that case, the variable will be retained as a variable when it is already set up.
      • When the variable value is different in the copied location compared to the destination location, the destination value will be applied.
  2. The variable will be converted into plain text when:
    • The variable does not exist in the destination project or master folder, and the copying user is not an administrator on the destination project or master folder.
    • So, if the copying user is a contributor on the destination project or master folder, the variable value will be converted to plain text when pasted.  Contributors cannot create or edit variables, so Chorus will convert the variable value into plain text to avoid causing them to become missing.
      • If the variable value contains a table or text formatting, this will be retained when the variable is converted to plain text.

The rules stated above apply in the scenarios when articles and clauses are copied between projects and masters within the same organization and when they are copied between different organizations.

The rules stated above also apply when articles and clauses are copied between an organization with Chorus Premium and an organization with Chorus Pro or Chorus (1).
