What Is A Nested Family?
Nested families are a group of Revit families which sit within another family. An example of this is a Doc M pack, where the wash basin, toilet and grab rails are all downloaded as a singular family, however, within this family there are multiple other families for the individual objects.
Linking a Nested Family to an NBS Specification.
When associating these to an NBS specification you may want to associate the individual families to their respective clauses, or you may want to associate the whole nested family to 1 clause that covers the whole object.
If you wish to associate the group of components to 1 clause within your specification, you can do this as if it were a normal object within your model as all of the components will be selected when selecting the object.
If you wish to assign the individual components to their own clauses, you will need to make sure that the family is shared. To check if a family is shared or set a family to shared, follow the steps below:
1) Select the object in your drawing and click the Edit Family option in the ribbon along the top
2) Click on the component you wish to share within the family and select Edit Family in the ribbon along the top
3) In the properties window on the left, scroll down to the "Other" section and select Shared. (If shared is already selected skip to step 8)
4) Once this is selected, click Load into Project in the top ribbon
5) The below window will then appear and you want to select the family which you would like to load this back into, not the project.
6) You will then be back in the family window. Again, click Load into Project in the top ribbon
7) When the Load into Project window appears, you will want to select the project you wish to load the family into.
8) You will now be able to select the individual component by hovering over the object and pressing tab on your keyboard.
